VM
editIt might be better to do all this in a VM (e.g. using VirtualBox or Hyper-V) in case something goes wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.13.234.134 (talk • contribs) 14:18, 26 July 2013
Time for an update?
editI'm trying to prepare a new laptop for the Wikimedia Hackathon in Stockholm, next week. Just a few questions...
- Installing HexChat (step 1): 'Windows 10 app' is not free... 'Windows 7+ 64bit Installer' does install Python 3.6.4... The current version of Python is ]https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-374/ 3.7.4] (8 July 2019). Later on is suggested to install 2.7.1 Hackathons/Laptop setup/Windows set up Python (dating from 2010/2011). What is the recommended version, 2.x or 3.x?
- Hackathons/Laptop_setup/SSH (step 4) asks, for Windows, to Click Start, then Programs, then Git. Choose Git Bash from the options.. However, Git is only installed in step 5.
Maybe more questions will follow, internet here is terribly slow... Thanks for answers, RonnieV (talk) 16:09, 10 August 2019 (UTC
As we are moving more and more to Telegram, or at least using that besides IRC, should https://desktop.telegram.org/ be among the suggested/advised installations? RonnieV (talk) 17:03, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
The installer for Git (2.22.0) asks in the third screen (not the first) to select components. Use Git Bash only is not among these... RonnieV (talk) 18:34, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
- O, found this one two screens further. Default there is Git from the command line and also from 3rd-party software. But lets keep it save. RonnieV (talk) 18:40, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
And selection Vim for Windows (default) is not the recommendation Git gives. RonnieV (talk) 18:38, 10 August 2019 (UTC) After installing SSH (First installed Git) I made a keygen. What if I move to another computer / windows-account? Do I have to use the same key, or is this just specific for the (Windows) user on this specific computer? (Sorry, just had my laptop stolen, so am even a bit more sceptic about things like this). RonnieV (talk) 19:21, 10 August 2019 (UTC) Next: Gerrit setup
- Hackathons/Laptop setup/Gerrit setup
- Open http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/ in a new tab, and create an account.
Is it just my luck that Wikimedia uses SUL, so my Wikipedia-account is my Wikimedia-account is ehhh... my Gerrit account?
The developer account needs to be made, and that is an obvious step. RonnieV (talk) 20:45, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
Hackathons/Laptop_setup/Windows_set_up_Python#Edit_the_Path tells to put two Python2.7-location at the end of the path. The installation of HexChat put Python3.6 in front and installing Python 3.7 requires other things to put to the path. I updated the HexChat-Python-path-variables to direct to Python 3.7 RonnieV (talk) 20:45, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
- And for more python-complexity... Git-review is based on Python 3.4... RonnieV (talk) 20:50, 10 August 2019 (UTC)
