It is my understanding that SharePoint is essentially an enterprise space where individuals and groups can create internal websites. Am I wrong on this?

If that is the case, my goal is to create a SharePoint site that is built on MediaWiki. Essentially, I just want to use SharePoint to host an internal wiki.

Sharepoint has a concept called "wiki", but it is very different from a normal MediaWiki site. Check sharepoint tutorials or documentation for more information on its capabilities. Definitively, you can not host MediaWiki inside Sharepoint (nor any other non-sharepoint site)
