About this board

Please provide feedback about the Content translation tool on this page.

We suggest checking the Frequently Asked Questions page first.

When reporting a bug, it will help a lot if you will indicate the following things:

  • Which article were you translating and to which language
  • Which browser did you use (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.)
  • If you're getting any errors, please provide log from browser console if possible. To open browser console: press Ctrl+Shift+j (or cmd+alt+J () on a Mac).

In case you are familiar with Phabricator, please consider reporting a bug there.

Thanks for your reminding, but I meant the main paragraph at the top of the article. ;)

No, it's not about infobox. And in a large amount of text. Give the following examples?

My translation was removed because an original article changed

I translated an article about Eval to Russian and it was quite good and comprehensive.

But then it was just simply removed and I received a notification that I have to start a new translation for scratch:

Ваш перевод Eval был сброшен, так как его содержимое устарело более чем на год. Начните новый перевод с новым содержимым в любое время.

Looks like that I can't even restore it from history.

This is insane! What's a point to make translation if it will be erased when only one character is changed in the original article?

Even if that article about Eval was slightly outdated that doesn't mean that it become useless.

Miroslav Ličko (talkcontribs)

Hi, I have Czech as the Target. I only get announcement about obsoleteness of the original in Czech. It did not happen to me that translation was removed.

Yes, meeting myself with partial text removals that are out of my control - a big issue seems to be, there is no backup posibility.

References 1-6 are lost

Miroslav Ličko (talkcontribs)

Hi, I do it so that I

- create a folder named wikipedia locally and file named after given article inside

- choose a template to be filled. It is usually "Citation of electronic monograph"

- paste the template to the file and fill it with data from original citation

e.g.

<ref>{{Cite news
|last=Kaminski
|first=Matthew
|date=3 March 2012
|title=The Man Vladimir Putin Fears Most
|work=The Wall Street Journal
|department=Opinion
|url=https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887323309404578614210222799482
|url-access=subscription
|access-date=31 July 2012}}</ref>

- you can so prepare citations in advance

- name a template in case it repeats to refer to according the name

e.g.

<ref name="News2012-03-03">

- then copy and paste the references into your translation to the given place, either complete or just e.g. given

<ref name="News2012-03-03"></ref>

Hopefully it helps you

Incorrect insertion of unnecessary language text

1
176.115.102.50 (talkcontribs)

You can correct the error that occurs when inserting a large text, if the text is too much (also tables). That is, when translating from Russian into Ukrainian, the Russian text will be inserted before the translation takes place.

Hi, can please anybody help how to prevent los of written content? Thank you

The content written to citation is repeatedly removed after reopening of a partially done work and it would be a pleasure to find out how to write the translation not to let it happen any more. Thank you for your understanding and help. Many thanks ahead

Hello Miroslav Ličko,

Sorry about the issue you are having, please can you provide more details of the following:

  • Which article were you translating and to which language
  • Which browser did you use (Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, etc.)
  • If possible, a screenshot of the addition to the citation and afterwards.

Providing these details will help in identifying the problem and working towards solving it.

Thank you!

Miroslav Ličko (talkcontribs)

Hello @UOzurumba (WMF),

Please accept my thank you for the tool, for your interest in help with further improvement.

- article - original is en:Halcyon Days (book)

- target cs Czech

In case you have an access: Přeložit stránku – Wikipedie (wikipedia.org)

It happens in other articles as well.

- browser - Microsoft Edge Version 94.0.992.50 (Official build) (64-bit)

- same behavior is FF 93.0 (64-bit)

- video showing errors - CtrlV.tv | Fastest screen record online

I prepared it on advice of @Martin Urbanec yesterday and shared. If you can get in touch and make sure if anybody else has started to work on it already. Thank you.

The First error relates at least to Czech template: Infobox - kniha.

The other two errors relate to tags <references /> and

<ref> with Czech template inside: Citace elektronické monografie in the case shown.

Please accept my thank you for your help

Miroslav Ličko (talkcontribs)

E.g. another translation Přeložit stránku – Wikipedie (wikipedia.org)

From Czech translation of en:Joe Armstrong (programmer) the Czech equivalent ofInfobox person disappeared completely.

It would be probably useful to have a possibility to export a translation in source form and keep it locally. It can serve at least as a backup and source for copy and past when anything happens.

Possibly to have an import and compare function as well.

Hi @UOzurumba (WMF), another related recording CtrlV.tv | Fastest screen record online showing further bug. It relates to ESC key press while filling Czech template Překlad (English Translation).

Before going there already reported bug is shown on Czech template Infobox - sídlo světa.

As you can see the Přidat více údajů (English Add more data) part is not kept.

The second part of the video shows serious bug in template Translation. It can get frozen in some cases and only reload of the page helps.

But reload leads to the loss of filled data in another prefilled templates as e.g. in the first step shown.

Please accept my thank you for dealing with

FYI Martin Urbanec

For the case you have an access Přeložit stránku – Wikipedie (wikipedia.org)

Which information are the "Nearby" suggestions based on?

Daß Wölf (talkcontribs)

When selecting a new page to translate, I noticed there's a list of "nearby" articles to translate. How did the translation feature determine my location? Is this done by Google Translate or Wikipedia/WMF/MW? I don't remember opting in to sharing my location with third parties.

Thanks for the link, 1234qwer1234qwer4. I'm aware of geoiplookup for instance, but this was creepily precise. That made me wonder if the IP is shared with Google. That is IMO something that users should be absolutely notified about. Unfortunately, I remember accepting something back when I started using Content translation, but I can't find any T&C link nor privacy notice in the tool anymore.

I cannot publish a translation that contains references to amazon.com in Spanish

Fanmixco (talkcontribs)

I'm doing a translation and cannot add it, I'm getting this message:

Potential spam content was detected in your translation. Details: The text you wanted to publish was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a forbidden external site. The following text is what triggered our spam filter: amazon.com

This is a preview of the case

Any idea how to proceed?

UOzurumba (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hello Fanmixco,

The spam is amazon.com; the website is not a reference source, so you have to find where the amazon website is used as a reference (if used as a reference), find an excellent reference to validate the section in question and replace it. If amazon.com is just inserted in the article to spam it, remove the link or URL, then you can proceed to publish the article. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

77.230.93.25 (talkcontribs)

Well, I can see more like a bug from the English one because I have removed all links and nothing changes. Any idea @UOzurumba (WMF)?

UOzurumba (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hello Fanmixco,

The above issue has been identified; you can track progress from this ticket.

Sorry about this bug, and thanks for the notification.

Use not-translated template with link to another language instead of links to non-existent articles

1
23.242.18.31 (talkcontribs)

It would be dramatically more convenient if, in case of a page referred to an article that is not transferred yet the translation process uses "non-translated" templates instead of just links to non-existent pages.

" Automatic edit filters have identified problematic content in your translation. Filter hit: Content Translation Edits "

I'm struggling to understand what is meant here, of course I have to edit the translations. Am I understanding the warning incorrectly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

1234qwer1234qwer4 (talkcontribs)

On which wiki did this error occur? It appears you have hit some kind of abuse filter, so this is not a problem about the content translation feature per se.

Cannot publish a translation

1
VHNT (talkcontribs)

Hi, I have translated an article in economics from English to Vietnamese. The automatic translation was quite good, so I only changed less than 10% of the content. When I tried to publish the translation, the following message appeared (in Vietnamese):

"Các bộ lọc sửa đổi tự động đã nhận ra nội dung có vấn đề trong bản dịch của bạn. Chi tiết: Giới hạn thành viên sử dụng công cụ dịch nội dung (chỉ nhóm thành viên được xác nhận mở rộng mới cho phép dùng)"

The English translation of the message is "Automatic correction filters have recognized problematic content in your translation. Details: Limit members to use the content translation tool (only the extended group of confirmed members is allowed to use"

Please explain to me what the message means. Thank you.

I have another question: Are English technical terms allowed to be included in parentheses after their translation into other languages? For example, after I translate the term Recursive dynamic as Động đệ quy, I want to put the English term in parenthesis after its translation. Is it permissible in Wikipedia? I found that their inclusion would help to make the meaning clearer if their foreign language translations are unfamiliar to the readers of foreign languages. Thank you.
