Unblock Ticket Response System
editI'd like to possibly host a workshop for the brand new English Wikipedia Unblock Ticket Response System. The system launched on March 18, 2012 and was developed by Hersfold, DeltaQuad, Thehelpfulone, and myself. It replaced the old mailing list which was outdated and ineffective. So far, the reception has been highly positive and I'd like to share our experience from development, to beta, and then release and also talk about new features. We have an idea about minor integration with Account Creation Assistance (ACC) tool. I'll set up a development server with a copy of the code and database schema and we can just knock some ideas out. If there are any ACC developers, we can work on the ideas for integration. I've already got Stwalkerster's buy-in and the WMF's and we have a game plan. Great opportunity for coordination and to get more ideas.--TParis (talk) 01:49, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Great! Sounds like you can plan and lead a short presentation and a sprint.
- Basically, there are three kinds of semiformal activities at the hackathon: tutorials, presentations, and sprints.
- A tutorial teaches the participants how to do something
- A presentation lectures about something (we want to have maybe 2 hours of these, total, limited to Saturday afternoon)
- A sprint is collaborative, writing or reviewing patches, designing, etc.
- When you say "I'd like to share our experience from development, to beta, and then release and also talk about new features" it sounds like you want to lead a 10-minute presentation on Saturday afternoon. And then for the development, if anyone else is interested, you can collaborate informally throughout the weekend. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator (talk) 23:21, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
- The project might be suitable for a sprint too. It's still a little rough around the edges, and I can probably think up more things that could be implemented/improved in half an hour, than we can implement in the entire weekend. 62.140.137.124 17:09, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Ops sprint
editThe Wikimedia ops team may hold a sprint colocated with this hackathon. Their topics of interest may include:
- Search - Documentation sprint (how to and recovery) - Monitoring sprint (Nagios/watchmouse/bots) - Security Sprint (labs security, access security) - Labs Sprint (too many to list) - EQIAD Sprint (Apache, Memcached - All Mediawiki-related)) Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator (talk) 06:19, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- Also: IPv6 Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Engineering Community Manager (talk) 13:07, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- The ops team's agenda for the Berlin hackathon. Includes SQUID, documentation, security monitoring, cron, and other topics. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Engineering Community Manager (talk) 17:57, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Adventurous expedition through WMF error logs
editA good source of potential bugs that need fixing is error logs. Maybe one day we'll have them empty, but right now on the live cluster there is still a significant amount of small and large errors that go by. No super critical ones but ones that should be fixed and it's not rare for them to hide a bigger mystery waiting to be unlocked.
I'd say we can give this another shot at this Hackathon. Someone with shell access can perform a few searches in the major logs (apache error log, php error log, mysql error log? - on fenari?), group them by unique patterns and sort by frequency and dump it somewhere on a whiteboard. And see if we can get some fixed :)
This will affect both MediaWiki core as well as deployed extensions. Krinkle (talk) 19:14, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- Is there a way these logs can be made available (preferably pre-filtered/de-duplicated)? siebrand (talk) 17:24, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- I updated ERRHUNT to have subpages where we we can publish a pre-processed version of error logs for users to dig through (during the Hackathon we could display the terminal directly on a beamer, but for preparation a wiki page would be nice).
- I'll ask if someone can come up with the right query so anyone with shell access can update it. Krinkle (talk) 19:38, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Hackathon Badges.
editHi everyone,
I have made certain badges that one can put up on their blog/website/wiki etc to say that " I am Going/hacking " for the Berlin Hackathon. Please use whatever version amongst them you like, and provide me with any suggestions or feedback.
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Drecodeam/Berlin_Hackathon_Badge Drecodeam (talk) 02:20, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for those. Gave me a reason to convince myself successfully of updating my userpage on dewiki. Tim (SVG) 12:02, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
Several potentials...
edit- Pageviews by category
- I have a request to build any kind of hack to recursively tally page views on wiki with counts enabled. Probably initially an api utilizing page. (deliverable June 11th; sigh)
- CalDAV client
- This is a regularly-requested extension: a decent calendar extension which can create/edit/display/alert using federated calendars.
- Single-source Wiki family
- We use the Blue Oxen model with some small tweaks, but this should be documented and cleaner management scripts created. Amgine (talk) 05:43, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Talking about maps and coordinates
editI would like to talk about maps in Wikipedia and work with others on this topic. Geographical content effects also other projects like WLM and "mobil". We can do a lot with the OpenStreetMap data and I have some ideas for possible hacks. Is there anybody interested? Please post your name here. Kolossos 11:06, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Kolossos, I am interested in this talk. Drecodeam (talk) 20:27, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! I'm interested too.
- My name is Robert Vogel. I sit on the table next to the "no photos bitte" table. Osnard (talk) 16:40, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hi! I'm interested too.
- I'm the guy with a blue squared shirt just in front of the main screen, at the left. My name is Patricio Molina. Mahadeva (talk) 16:52, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Where is everyone staying?
editWhat hostel are the volunteers and what (NH) hotel is the staff this time? Multichill (talk) 14:23, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
- Multichill, I'd rather not share that info on a public webpage, to help protect the peace of mind of some of the folks staying at the hotel/hostel. The hotel's pretty nearby, and I can email you the names of the hostel & hotels. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Engineering Community Manager (talk) 15:26, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Talking about managing bug reports / Bugzilla
editHeja, I've spent the last years managing and triaging bug reports in several FLOSS projects (GNOME, Maemo, MeeGo, Mozilla). If you are interested in bugtracking & its workflows and if you'd like to share your frustration and joy with Wikimedia Bugzilla I'd love to listen and discuss with you! This is how I look - please find me! -- andre Andreklapper (talk) 16:50, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Saturday 14:00+ Lightning talks topics
editThese are suggestions. Edit the Thread summary to add yours, or to change the order.
- Wikidata (?)
- Extensions OpenID, RSS, WikiArticleFeeds, EtherpadLite, AJAXPoll (Wikinaut)
- open e-mail notification issues (Wikinaut)
I suggest a session of Lightning Talks after the already scheduled "Short presentation by Wikidata team in a separate room" (Saturday, 2012-06-02 14:00+). See also the other thread below "Topics people will be working on".
Add your topics here in the summary. Wikinaut (talk) 18:49, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Wikimania mobile app
editI apologize that I'm not there in person to ask this, but someone on IRC suggested I share it with the Hackathon.
The idea of a Wikimania mobile app has come up - was wondering if anyone at Hackathon had an interest.

Photos
editHere are some photos of the event so far: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Victorgrigas#Berlin_Hackathon_2012 Hopefully I haven't photographed anyone who does not wish to be photographed! Please let me know if I have! Vgrigas (talk) 07:57, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- I uploaded some photos I took to Commons on commons:Category:Hackathon_Berlin_2012. There should not be people with the 'no photo' badge in these.
- I also created a category on Commons for pictures taken during the short visit of Berlin (on sunday for my case) commons:Category:Berlin_visit_during_Hackathon_2012 Esby (talk) 13:35, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Ways to extend the MediaWiki (web) installer
editIs somebody interested in extensibility of the MediaWiki installer? Or even has experience with extending it? Is there a way to add more installation steps or to change the existing ones? Are there plans for future development?
I'd love to learn more about this topic. Maybe someone else too? Osnard (talk) 12:52, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- Osnard, Brion Vibber rewrote the installer a while back, so maybe talk to him? Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Engineering Community Manager (talk) 14:17, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- Related: I was talking to Roan earlier today, and suggested that perhaps there should be a "retry" button when there's an error in the installer, in addition to the "back" and "continue" buttons already present. I figured this might be of interest to anyone working with improving the installer. Waldir (talk) 15:24, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

- I couldn't see it yesterday because the sky was already dark. I can just say: that's Germany! Today in the morning I used the underground train and two men went into the train. Then they opened unexpected their bags and played music on their instruments. To my surprise they weren't bad. Tim (SVG) 14:19, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Long Night of Science (Saturday)
edit"[Die] Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft" (engl. Long Night Of Science) takes place tonight (Saturday) in Berlin-Potsdam. It begins at 5 PM and ends at 1 AM. If you buy a ticket after 11 PM (2300), you only have to pay 5 euros (Hackathon ends at 11 PM). You can meet scientists and ask them questions. Here's a list of locations (English version by Google Translator). It's also about computer science (see here (English version by Google Translator)). Please attend by creating a post with your real and username below (or just the real name as IP address). I'll contact you after 10 PM (I'm minigolfing).
Cheers,

A few yacht flags (45 x 30 cm) left
editHi, many years ago I produced some yacht flags (polyester). Perhaps anyone interested ? I'll bring the remaining on Sunday. Producing costs were 15,- € per flag.
