Linking image directly to Media file
editWhen using something like link=Media:Filename.pdf
in MediaWiki 1.23 (and maybe elsewhere), the image will show a link to the wiki page Media:Filename.pdf instead of linking to the file directly as one would expect. This link works like File:Filename.pdf and does not lead to a direct download of the file. A workaround is to use the filepath
parser function, as in link={{filepath:Filename.pdf}}

editJust a note, this blog entry came about a few days before this page was started. However, this trick is an old one and not one stolen from Andy. See Uncyclopedia:User_talk:Insertwackynamehere for when I first discovered it in 2005. Splarka 18:01, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Remove link?
editFollowing this link:
- Extension:LinkedImage - image links (XML tag)
Tells you that the extension is not obsolete. Should this be removed?
link= syntax
editlink= syntax is now supported. Example
[[Image:Flag of France.svg|20px|link=MediaWiki/fr|MediaWiki/fr]]
" generates a flag that links to the article MediaWiki/fr.
...so it seems this page is all out-of-date old workarounds which are no longer necessary
link= functions work but then disappear
editHi, on my website http://www.klusopedia.nl i am working with several icons (see homepage). I do not want those icons to link to the image file. I just want them for illustrative purposes without any link at all. So I implemented the link= function. However, for some strange reason this works right after i applied it, but a few hours/days later, for no reason the link= reference is simply gone and the image is back to linking to the image file. I've had the same problem with images that i wanted to link to another page (link=pagetitle)in my wiki. Does anyone have a clue? it's really important for me. ps. i am using fck editor, could that have something to do with it? Thanks!
Plain text URL?
editdefining link= allows for the URL to be shown to a given image, but it still makes it into a link. I'm attempting to use a wiki defined image as a background in CSS. Is there a way to get the URL to an image from mediawiki w/o entering it by hand? (in which case, if a user changes the image it wont update properly).
- I'm looking for the exact same thing. I'm almost contemplating writing an extension to do just that. --Danbrice (talk) 09:37, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
