interwiki authorization on another site

3
Derek Jones Smr (talkcontribs)

Hi!

I have two private wikis where authorization using a login and password is required.

I want to transclude a page from one wiki into another.

If I use the Interwiki link like 'https://my-first.net/w/$1' I get an authorization request on the page

How can I change the link to include the username and password for authorization?

Or maybe there is another way to transclude a page from one wiki to another where login is required?

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

You'll have to publish a third wiki, accessible only internally (from the same server and not externally), with the same LocalSettings.php and database but changing it to allow anyone to read. Then add a different interwiki that points to that internal URL. If done correctly, the server would be able to communicate to itself without problems without anyone else being able to access it. Note, however, that anyone from the wiki would be able to read any page using transclusions, unless you only whitelist read the pages you want to be transcluded.

unfortunately it seems to be the only possible way

maybe the developers will pay attention to this request

But thanks anyway for the idea!

Interwiki link on help button of VE does not work

2
Teetrition (talkcontribs)

I noted that the interwiki link on help button of Visual Editor which links to

URL of wiki/$wgArticlePath/Mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:VisualEditor/User_guide

does not work.

It goes to an error page which says,

Bad title: The requested page title was invalid, empty, or an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title. It may contain one or more characters that cannot be used in titles.

I found this link works properly on Wikipedia, let's say,

https://en.wikipedia.com/wiki/Mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:VisualEditor/User_guide

Is there any further settings to do to figure this issue out?

Thanks.

Teetrition (talkcontribs)

I found the solution to figure this issue out by chance and sorry for not reading the document carefully. Just set the option Forward of Mediawiki interwiki link from no to yes on page Special:Interwiki (Extension interwiki needed, manual database operation is also viable).

do I have to manually add all languages for Interwiki links to other languages

Hi,

Reading the manual, I suppose to add to add a link in sidebar for the page in de. Do I have to manually add every one of the other languages in this way? (guess the harder part is to find out page name in languages I don't read.

Thanks

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

Yes, this requires manual work to identify the page name on the other language wiki

Eric.LEWIN (talkcontribs)

In principle, this is exactly why WikiData is a cross-language database : the correspondance work has to be done, of course, and the best place is WikiData.

Management through wikipage

Wouldn't it be much more convenient and straightforward to manage the Interwiki links through a wikipage? probably in the namespace "Mediawiki".

Or perhaps a structure in LocalSettings, much like almost everything else in Mediawiki.

I'm aware of Extension:Interwiki. Thank you.

What I'm proposing is a different, in my opinion more direct approach, of managing interwiki links. An approach that can be programmatically realised and which doesn't involve messing up with the database tables.

Similar to what Extension:InterWiki does, instead.

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

Messing with wiki code (trying to interpret the code, auto-correct errors, etc) looks more crazy than doing the right thing and storing structured data on a database.

أحمد (talkcontribs)

We disagree here. The structure is not that complex. Wiki editors are likely to be used to manipulating wikitext, especially those who are likely to be granted editing rights to the "Mediawiki:" namespace where such controls are likely to be.

On a more general note, I think configuration should all be in text files, or in wikipages. At least as much of it as possible.

Interwiki search howto ?

1
Fraifrai (talkcontribs)

Adding an interwiki to the searching process is not documented. When adding a wiki in the interwiki table, interwiki links are ok but the search engine does not search in this wiki despite the source code SpecialSearch.php seems to handle such results.

How do we include an interwiki in the internal wiki search ? Shouldn't it be documented here ?

Interwiki links inside references are problematic

2
Timeshifter (talkcontribs)

I noticed recently that interwiki links inside references will not be made clickable if one puts a bar in it. For example; without manually adding the link label. Normally, for interwiki links not in references, the mediawiki software will automatically add the link label when saving.

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

The pipe trick should fail with any normal link, not just interwiki links. See task T4700

Bugzilla in default?

If you mean bugzilla: pointing to our (mediawiki) bugzilla that is because "bugzilla" is ambiguous in that reasoning we have ours as "mediazilla:" in the default interwiki list.

This is a common request, and strangely obfuscated...
