Details

When this option is enabled, users will be able to use the {{DISPLAYTITLE}} magic word to override the title of a page. For instance, it can be used to italicize part of the title or convert the capitalised initial to a lowercase letter.

The way it works is determined by another setting, $wgRestrictDisplayTitle .

If $wgRestrictDisplayTitle is set to true (default), the selected title must normalise to the same canonical title. For example, on a page titled IPod, one can use {{DISPLAYTITLE:iPod}} to force the title to appear as "iPod" when viewed. However, {{DISPLAYTITLE:Foo}} will not work, because "Foo" is not the same title as "IPod".

If $wgRestrictDisplayTitle is set to false, this restriction no longer applies, allowing for any display title to be set.

History

$wgAllowDisplayTitle was disabled by default in MediaWiki until 1.10.0, as previous implementations were buggy, incompatible with caching, and didn't perform title normalization checks, which are essential to allow correct linking to articles.

  • $wgRestrictDisplayTitle is available since MediaWiki 1.14.
