Extension talk:Gather/FAQ
The page is still missing screenshots of the prototype. --Melamrawy (WMF) (talk) 18:16, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
- I added two relevant pictures from the latest development state :) --Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 08:09, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- Wonderful :)--Melamrawy (WMF) (talk) 09:55, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Section "Why is Gather not part of Extension:MobileFrontend? And why build a new extension if Extension:Collection exists?"
editThis sections seems to be totally uninteresting for users, who want to read more about Gather as a feature (e.g. as a user on enwiki), so i suggest to just removin git? :) --Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 16:43, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
- what users are and are not interested may surprise you, but i doubt anyone is interested as the answer doesnt answer the question at all. Bawolff (talk) 17:00, 26 March 2015 (UTC)
Florianschmidtwelzow please feel free. :). Bawolff what other pointers should have been in the reply instead? I am happy to elaborate differently on the answer, and you can also feel free to fix, or rephrase the question as I put it. :) Thanks--Melamrawy (WMF) (talk) 13:49, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
Without explicit consensus by the community, the maintenance lies only by the WMF
editThe WMF can't invent such an unwanted gadget and put the responsibility for the probably heavy maintenance into the hand of the different communities without explicit consensus of those communities. Up to the point where a consensus with each community is reached, the responsibility lies solely with the WMFers, who invented this gadget. See also here for the corresponding problems. --♫ Sänger - Talk - superputsch must go 10:40, 30 April 2015 (UTC).
- As previously discussed. A list of articles grouped and labelled is something that already exists such as here. When the conversations started about the feature, there was also a community talk_and request_ about multiple public watchlists, which again, as a content, are going to be a group of articles, listed together and labelled. That said, the concept of the feature isn't new, the implementation is different, yet this is already a work in progress, which means that we can always discuss, change, improve, adapt..etc. Thanks :)--Melamrawy (WMF) (talk) 14:54, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Instructions, please
editHow do I use it? All I see around here is discussion of what it's for and how it may be expanded and so on. Apparently we're already more than two thirds of the way through the beta period and I haven't seen any kind of public announcement about this, and I use the mobile beta front end.
So there's an extension to the mobile front-end (which I'm using right now), called "Gather". How do I install it? How do I use it? Is there any information on it for people who haven't been in the project from the beginning? Is it for Wikipedia or only here on mediawiki wiki? I only found out about it by asking on the Wikipedia Village Pump about this "Collections" thing. (w:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#"Collections", mobile front beta)
I'm not trying to sound hostile, but it seems to me that some of the most basic things are missing here.
P.S. And please bear in mind that anything about it for the user will be accessed on the mobile front-end. So it has to be readable and usable there, not just on the desktop interface. --Thnidu (talk) 23:51, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Thnidu, thank you for writing, so you are signed in on your phone, and you use beta mode, and you didn't find a message like this before? Please let us know, thanks :-)--Melamrawy (WMF) (talk) 11:49, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
- Melamrawy (WMF): No, I don't think so. --Thnidu (talk) 01:16, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Thnidu, this is a FAQ, not a help page. The FAQ seems designed mainly for concerned Wikimedia users, while how to use the thing should be a help page. Probably one is planned, though I can't find anything at Help:Extension:Gather. --Nemo 16:51, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Nemo bis: That's certainly the proper order for something that's in general release. But putting a tool out for testing without any instructions anywhere, as you have observed (and is still the case), seems just a leetle bit user-unfriendly, wouldn't you say? I trust that the point isn't to see what happens when users flounder around helplessly, nor to exclude those who aren't already familiar with the ins and outs, the back rooms, hidden corridors, and secret handshakes that amount to what in realspace communities is called "oral tradition". --Thnidu (talk) 01:16, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
