The 2011 Account Creation Improvement Project A/B-tested alternate messages. Here are the messages on www.mediawiki.org, from Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Customusertemplate. Note the main experiment was on En-wiki, en:User:S_Page_(WMF)/ACIP_messages shows the messages there.
